INSTITUTE OF HEARTMATH

The Institute of HeartMath was established over 15 years ago and has conducted extensive research into the physiology of stress and has developed very useful methods for interrupting the stress response and re-training the autonomic nervous system for health and improved performance.  Use the following links  to explore the HeartMath products and literature that I have found to be clinically helpful in preparatory work with EMDR clients.:

The HeartMath Professional Freeze Framer Package includes the integrated software and hardware used for tracking heart rate variability.  Used in training the client in RSA breathing pattern or other breathing pattern, this can help identify a specific breathing pattern which will help the client quickly quiet a state of overarousal.  The standard package comes with a sensor which fits on the finger.  I recommend adding the optional ear sensor for improved accuracy.  This package is designed for the clinician's office.  Some clients will benefit from the use of this package in their home or office after having been trained in the clinician's office.  For more information about the HeartMath Health Professional Freeze-Framer click here.

The emWave is a portable unit which allows the client to practice arousal management skills outside of the clinician's office.  It provides auditory and visual feedback and can be used in any setting, eg. metro, bus, office, or home.  Regular practice with this unit will help the client develop the ability to interrupt the stress response and to quiet states of overarousal.  Clinicians who are not comfortable with installing or using new software will find this unit to be very user-friendly and while not as full-featured as the Freeze-Framer Package above, it is an excellent unit for helping the client identify and practice specific breathing patterns, imagery methods, or other interventions which will be effective in interrupting the stress response.  This unit includes an ear sensor.  For more information about emWave by HeartMath click here.

The Practitioner's Guide is a HeartMath publication which provides a comprehensive introduction to the use of the Freeze-Framer system in your clinical practice.  For more information click here.

The HeartMath Store has the full range of books, CDs, and training systems offered by the Institute.  For more information click here.
